Ashbourne is a pleasant market town, often referred to as the Gateway to Dovedale. Market days are Thursday and Saturdays. The town has many buildings of interest and a very beautiful church with a spire rising 212ft.
It has an enviable reputation for its abundance of antique shops, shopping facilities and modern leisure centre.
Events which bring visitors from afar are the Highland Gathering every July, the Bridge Jump and Boat Race on New Years Day and the annual Royal Shrovetide football game, played over two days, on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. Apart from the pubs the whole of the town closes for this event, anyone can join in as it is pretty much a free for all.
Before spending an afternoon around Ashbourne why not call at The Knockerdown Inn and Restaurant for a great family meal in a superb location.
