The History of the Knockerdown Inn

Reflections of Yesteryear
The Nock-a-down as it was affectionately known, opened as a beer house in 1838.
- Its official name was the Greyhound, this dog being the family crest of the Gell family, who owned the property.
- In 1848 the Inn was granted a full license and has traded ever since.
The Gell family sold the Greyhound or the Knockerdown as we know it on July 11th 1919 for £930.00. Described as stoned and tiled with a Taproom, Bar, Cellar, Parlour, Kitchen, three beds and a box room, outside was a tiled building for tying four cows and a stable for two horses.
On February 4th 1931 the Inn was purchased by Marstons Brewery
Over the years changes have occurred, one being the opening of Carsington Water n 1992 by HM The Queen
Carsington Water now attracts millions of visitors a year and has put The Knockerdown Inn well and truly on the map.
One thing that has never changed is the warm welcome on your visit here.
