History of the InnReflections of YesteryearThe Nock-a-down as it was affectionately known, opened as a beer house in 1838. Its official name was the Greyhound, this dog being the family crest of the Gell family, who owned the property. In 1848 the Inn was granted a full license and has traded ever since. The Gell family sold the Greyhound or the Knockerdown as we know it on July 11th 1919 for £930.00. Described as stoned and tiled with a Taproom, Bar, Cellar, Parlour, Kitchen, three beds and a box room, outside was a tiled building for tying four cows and a stable for two horses. On February 4th 1931 the Inn was purchased by Marstons Brewery and over the years changes have occurred, one being the opening of Carsington Water in 1992 by HM The Queen. Carsington Water now attracts millions of visitors a year and has put The Knockerdown Inn well and truly on the map. One thing that has never changed is the warm welcome on your visit here. |
